Worcester County Journal Club FAQ

Thinking of joining the Journal Club? We'd love to have you!

1) What is the Worcester County Journal Club (WCJC)?

The WCJC is a group focused on reading, reviewing, and discussing recent research in the field of applied behavior analysis.

2) Who can join the Club?

Given the need to review and discuss peer-reviewed journal articles with an eye towards critical thinking and application, the WCJC is geared for intermediate level BCBAs and BCaBAs.  However, educators working in a classroom using the principles of ABA or educators with a strong background in psychology are welcome to take part.

Those attending for purely education purposes or who wish to participate without receiving CEs may attend free of charge though are required to register.

3) What requirements are there for joining?

Members are expected to come to each meeting having read the assigned articles and completed the corresponding note-taking sheet in order to participate actively in the discussion.  For BCBAs or BCaBAs applying for continuing education credits (CEs) will need to hand in a copy of their notes as well as sign in and out to each meeting.

4) Do I have to attend all meetings?

While we encourage members to join in for every topic, you may sign up for as many or as few meetings as you wish.

5) Can I earn CEs?

Yes.  The WCJC is an approved ACE provider and BCBAs and BCaBAs can earn CEs for each meeting provided that participants attend the full period, demonstrate completion of their note sheets, complete an online feedback form, and pay a small fee for processing certificates.

6) How much do CEs cost?

As WCJC is a small group, we strive to keep our costs for CEs down.  We offer two tiers of CE: member and visitor.

Members can pay a full fee upfront to attend all WCJC events for the year (6-7 meetings) and receive a discount as well as the opportunity to vote on the articles chosen each month.  Members are also eligible for an invitation-only end of year social event.

Visitors can sign up for any the topics they are interested in, though are not able to vote on the articles to be discussed.

Member costs for an annual cycle are 25 dollars (7 CEs).  Visitor costs are 5 dollars per event (1 CE)

7) Can I choose what articles we read?

Anyone signed up as a member will receive a brief survey with article abstracts around each month's topic and will be allowed to vote on two articles of interest.

8) When does the WCJC meet?

The group meets once a month to discuss 2-3 articles around a set list of topics which can be found on our club calendar.  We have two sites available, one for weekday and one for weekend meetings for whichever best meets your scheduling needs.  Weekday meetings are typically held on Tuesdays from 4-5 pm at the Jefferson Elementary School (1745 Main St., Jefferson, MA).  Weekend meetings are typically held on Sunday from 9-10 am in Shrewsbury (exact address TBD).

9) Sounds good.  How do I sign up?

Go to our registration page to sign up and to submit payment for CEs/membership.

10) What if I sign up now? Won't I miss out on CEs?

If we're able to sign up enough people who missed the fall sessions, we will be extending the calendar into the summer to maximize the number of individuals who can participate fully in all CE activities.  We will inform new participants with any updates to the schedule.  We are a small enough group to allow for some flexibility in scheduling make-up meetings.

11) What if I have more questions?

Email group leader Robert Parry-Cruwys or send a message through our Facebook page or on Twitter (@robparrycruwys).
